When I think about my creative experiences in the past, I almost always think about my mom. I was in daycare from a very young age, where we always had opportunities to do crafts. My mom realized how much I loved arts and crafts so she always had art supplies at home for me to do anything I wanted.
By the time I was six and my sister was born I had an entire art supply room at my house, and a large area at my parent's business where I spent most of my time. I remember 'interviewing' a babysitter when I was 7 or 8 and the only question I had was did she know lots of arts and craft activities? Every chance I got when I was not in school I was doing arts and crafts.
I have such vivid memories of doing visual art activities at home, yet I'm surprised to realize I cannot remember much when I was in school. I can remember a few times when "The Art Man" was brought into classes and did soap stone carving with us and ceramic painting with us, and I can remember my grade six teacher. Mrs. Smith, my grade six teacher, is the only teacher I can remember doing creative art activities with. We did countless of different activities, my favourite being origami.
After grade six I moved to Orillia, and for whatever reason lost my passion for visual arts. I suppose it is because I was older, and suddenly had a lot more homework and less free time. By highschool I did not feel I could be successful in an art class, and turned to drama instead which I continued with until grade twelve. I always loved having a venue to express myself, and was very successful in drama. Whenever I see people who have pure artistic talent I always wonder if I could have further developed my passion for visual arts had I chosen to take art classes instead of drama.
