Art Exemplars

The following images are of the art I have completed since January in my visual arts course:
This activity asked us to show how we felt about teaching art to students (see Reflection 1: How's your heart today?) I thought this was a great activity for students to engage with art and have an opportunity to use art to communicate with a new teacher. I am confident I will use this same activity with my grade 2/3 students on my next practicum.

This activity had us start by looking at art prints and finding different types of lines. We then used those lines in these 6 boxes and also created new colours. This activity is a great response to the part of the curriculum that ask students to work with different lines, warm and cool colours etc. I enjoyed how this activity allowed us to interact with prints. I would be hesitant to use prints with students because they will likely try to make a copy of what they see but this activity had us create something abstract from the print.

This was an activity that was entirely new to me. We drew from a model in 6 different ways, as well as a scribble drawing. The main focus of this assignment was that what we were doing were "-ish" drawings. They weren't expected to look perfectly real, if we wanted that we'd just take a picture.. I loved how this was explained to us, and I will always remember that when teaching my students art.
The above 7 images are: Blind Contour, Negative Space, Texture, Contour, Shape Drawing, Scribble Drawing, and Scribble Technique.

These proportional drawings was another interesting activity. It was very difficult for us to use scribbles just to draw a figure instead of trying to draw the outline of what we see. The second picture is of my 'best proportions' drawing.

This activity addressed proportions in a different way. Instead of trying to represent a human figure in the way we see it we used Picaso's style as inspiration and created drawings that were intentionally not proportionate.

From these drawings we picked our favourite and drew it on a larger scale and with colour...
I chose to draw AL. I am extremely proud of how this turned out, I do not see myself as someone who is creative yet with the teacher instructions we were given I feel I created something I like. Without a doubt I would do this activity with my students so they too could create something to feel
proud of!

This was my bitstrip comic that we created based upon a knock knock joke. This activity addressed both the art curriculum and the media literacy curriculum. We had a long discussion about how important technology is in the classroom which I entirely agree with. I feel using bitstrips and the other technologies available to classrooms are a necessity to create computer literate students. This is why I chose to present my Art Journal through a blog; i have never created a blog before and wanted to have an opportunity to experiment with this technology!

These photos are from our stamping class. I enjoyed engaging with the premade stamps in a way younger students would. It was a very simple activity that could be done in a variety of ways depending on the students and curriculum expectations.

The above images are from our print making class. The first three are from my collection "Lines" and the last one is from a stamp we made from paper.
Working with printing ink was a very new experience that I think would be enjoyable for older students. I would have to spend  a lot of time  practicing this on my own before I would feel comfortable instructing students on how to do this. While I feel my prints worked out well I do not feel knowledgeable enough to teach a class on it.
I enjoyed the stamp made from paper activity but it did not translate the way I expected it to. I did layers and layers of paper flower of varying sizes to get dimension to my final print. I do not feel all of the hard work showed through. I'm not sure if it was because I expected too much from the ink or if it was because I was new at working with the ink.

Ultimately this was a very informative enjoyable class. It was by far my favourite class that I always looked forward to. That excitement and enjoyment is something I plan to incorporate into all of my lessons whenever I can :)

  1. I love the How's Your Heart Today art! You have a write up about what you used it for, do you have the lesson? I have done a very similar lesson while going through teachers college and have not been able to find the lesson plan anywhere! I am wanting to use this lesson with my class because I think it's a great way to gage how everyone feels.
