For this lesson students will create vases using their face profiles. Students will gain experience with water colour paints. Students will also learn about positive and negative space. This activity is for grades 3
Materials:
- Water colour paper
- Large sized white paper
- Water colour paint
- Brushes
- Construction paper
Directions:
*note* this activity will be most successful if modeled for the class before they create it.
Step one: Post a piece of the large white paper to a bulletin board or chalk board. In pairs have students trace each other's profile. Have students out the facial profile.
Step two: Trace the profile onto a piece of construction paper. Flip the profile and trace to create a vase on the construction paper. Cut out the vase.
Step three: Give students creative freedom to create a background to mount the vase on and to create the flowers and stems. Advise students they may want to secure the vase after creating the flowers so that the vase covers the base of the stems. Students can do an abstract water painting and cut flowers out of it, students may paint flowers directly onto background, or students may want to make more textured flowers out of tissue paper, or thick paints.
Step four: Have students write a reflection explaining why they chose their method to create the flowers.
