Lesson #5: Tear Animals

For this lesson students tear construction paper to create fluffy animals. This lesson would be appropriate for a kindergarten class, especially if scissor safety has not been taught or well understood.

Materials:
  • Construction paper
  • Glue
  • Markers
Directions:
Step one: Before the day of the art lesson ask students to bring in a stuffed animal. This could be tied into a pajama day. Students could also be asked to bring in stuffed bears which could be tied into a lesson on hibernation.

Step two: Start by modeling this activity for students. Start with the biggest part of the body (likely the stomach) and tear a circle. Model pulling small pieces off all around the body to make the animal look fluffy. Let students know that you cannot tear the paper wrong. Show how smaller pieces can be glued together to make an arm, leg etc.

Step three: Let students make their own animals. Encourage them to use their stuffed animal to get ideas, and to use as many colours as they would like.

Step four: While students work on assignment circulate and discuss what animal they are creating and write on the back of their page.
