For this lesson students will create paper pulp creations based on a subject they are learning. This lesson is appropriate for any age; the level of difficulty depends on the students' abilities and the subject matter.
Materials:
- Scrap Paper
- Flour
- Water
- Salt
- Cardboard Tubes, Balloons etc to make structure of creation
- Paint
- Markers
- Pencils
Step one: Discuss subject matter with students that the creation will be based on. Discuss expectations, certain features that should be included, and make suggestions for ways to structure. E.g. if making a globe talk about continents that should be shown, shape the globe should be in, and to use a balloon to base the shape on.
Step two: If using a structure to base the creation on (like a balloon) create a paste of two parts flour, one part water, and some salt to eliminate mold. Dip scrap paper strips in the paste, remove most of the paste, and cover structure. The more layers the stronger the item.
If creation will not be based upon a structure use a blender and combine paste with the scrap paper. Make sure it is a very thick consistency. Allow students to use the new paste as a type of clay to create structure.
For either method use strips of white paper for the last layer so that it is blank to paint on later.
Step three: Allow creations to dry. Placing them near a low heat source like a heat radiator will help the creation dry completely. Make sure creation is entirely dry to eliminate possibility of mold.
Step four: Paint creation according to expectations established at the beginning of the activity. Students can use pencils to plan out painting. Students can also use markers for fine details.
